REPORT - Awareness campaign at Lulu, Al Barsha

Lulu hypermarket, Al Barsha has always been known as a trend setter of the retail industry in the region; and our team was grateful for getting an opportunity to create awareness about Intellectual Property and its rights to the customers of this well-known retail franchise.

Our team reached out to the customers and explained every individual, the importance of IP and how knowledge of such information can be crucial to oneself.

The students took help of interlocking bricks to explain the types of IP, i.e., patents, trademarks and copyrights; this example using the bricks was used to show that IP can be found in the simplest of subjects.

The team also took feedback for the review of its presentation.

Lulu thanked our team and Dubai customs, and appreciated the extent of our efforts being put in to bringing forward the repercussions of not having the knowledge of IPR.

REPORT - Talk at Talk-Masters

On 7TH April, 2017 the IPR team visited the Talk-Masters session to spread awareness about Intellectual Property Rights in the community.
Talk-Masters is a club formed by Keralite professionals working in UAE. The members of Talk-Masters get together on every alternate Fridays to hone their public speaking skills. People of all ages are encouraged to join the group and contribute to the learning at Talk-Masters.
At Talk-Masters, the IPR team was greeted with an energetic and enthusiastic crowd who were eager to learn about Intellectual Property.
The session took off with a welcome speech by the host, who greeted the team and introduced them to the crowd. The members then told the student about Talk-Masters and their aim to enhance their public speaking and communication skills.
The IPR team then introduced the crowd to Intellectual Property Rights and told them about different ways of protecting intellectual property i.e. trademarks, patents and copyrights.  They talked about how IP Laws are commonly infringed and how we can address the problems of IPR. The crowd was intrigued and put across their queries about how they encounter such problems relating to violation of IP commonly.

Then we had a discussion about the various problems we face in everyday lives relating to IP. At the end of the session the organizers of Talk-Masters thanked the JSSPS IPR team and asked us to briefly talk about what we had learnt from the opportunity they had given us and what we plan to do for the society. Talk-Masters was indeed a great platform and had a fairly big audience too, great way to raise awareness on Intellectual Property and Cultural Arts.

REPORT - Interview with Mr. Shabeel Ummer

On the 6th of April, as a part of our project in affiliation with Dubai Customs, we had invited Mr. Shabeel Ummer to our school premises, JSS Private School. This project is an awareness campaign for the topic of Cultural Arts and Intellectual Property.
We are trying to get the community to understand the importance of the protection of IP. Therefore we thought it would be appropriate for us to get a person who is experienced in the respective field to answer a few questions regarding this.
Mr. Shabeel studies law at Vishweswarapura College of Law in Bangalore, Karnataka. He attained his secondary education from ICA English Higher Secondary School in Kerala, India. He has written a book titled “Me and My Loneliness Often Speak”.
The interview proved to be very enlightening as all our queries regarding IP were cleared. Mr. Shabeel, having been an author and a lawyer is extremely well-versed in the topic of intellectual property. This turned out to be very useful to us, as students who are carrying out this project.
He answered all our questions with extremely relevant answers. He explained to us about what is the symbol of copyright and the ISBN number with regard to his newly written and launched book. He also told us about the importance of IPR for Cultural Arts.

Overall, this interview was extremely helpful, not only for our project, but also for us as young citizens of such an important generation. We took back with us, an immense amount of knowledge of the topic of Cultural Arts and Intellectual Property.

REPORT - Visit to Etihad Museum

As a part of our journey in learning about IPR and UAE we ended up in the Etihad Museum in Dubai on 29th April, 2017
Etihad museum beautifully depicts the history and the heritage of the union and beautifully merges the past and the future together. The high level of technology along with the rich history of the UAE clearly shows us how far we have come and what we can learn from our past and why we should enrich ourselves with the culture of UAE. UAE is well known to consider the future but this museum beautifully depicts and takes us to the past.
We went to the Etihad museum and learnt about the history of how UAE became a union of seven emirates. We could study the lives of the original rulers of each emirate and also their personal belongings were on display at the museum.
We got an insight of the family tree of rulers of each emirate and in a beautiful mini-theatre we watched a movie about the time when UAE got independence from the British rulers and how gradually all the emirates joined together to form a union.
We were also able to read the constitution of the country and it was beautifully shown on an interactive screen.
We also got to study the different currencies used in the UAE before it finally settled for the Emirati Dirham and different passports from the past to the present were on display.
At the end of our tour we played a little game on one of the screens to see how much we learnt and it was truly a great and an enriching experience.
